My Passions in Life

Things I love beyond my work.

golf

Golf

In my sophomore year of high school, I decided that I wanted to join another sport to fill up my schedule. I wasn’t very athletically inclined and had no experience in any of the sports that my school offered in the spring, but I was determined to find something. On a whim, I decided to try out for the women’s golf team. Although the only golf experience I had was mini, my father
had clubs I could use, and a vast knowledge of golf from when he used to go before my brother and I were adopted.
There were no cuts that first season since the program was small, but it was unfortunately cut short due to the pandemic shutting everything down after only a week of practice. I decided that I wasn’t going to let the pandemic stop me. I wanted to become a better golfer with more time on my hands than ever before. My father would take me to the municipal parks to practice hitting real golf balls, while at home I would go out every day and hit plastic practice balls in the backyard to get my practice in. When the next season came around, it was my junior year, and we were still a very small program. With eight girls, six were able to go to the varsity events so my coach kept the same five girls, and rotated the sixth one out to give everybody a chance to be in the lineup.
My coach had already seen a tremendous improvement from my practice the year before, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the players always in the lineup and deemed a co-captain of the team.
That summer, I decided I wanted to be able to learn more, and cold called a local private golf club, funnily enough where my parents got married, asking them if they had caddies and if I would be able to work there as one. They responded quickly, and that summer I was the only female caddy on staff. As a forecaddy, I would wake up at five in the morning to get to the golf club to help the golfers every weekend. Getting to watch more experienced golfers every week helped me improve my swing, and getting to use the range on Mondays was a great perk.
In the spring of my senior year, I returned to my school’s golf team, and there was an unbelievable turnout. Fortunately, my coach was still impressed with my golf skills, and how much I had improved over the summer from practicing, and learning from the golfers while caddying I was given a permanent spot in the lineup again. That season, I was also appointed co-captain with the other senior on the team who had joined the same year as me, and we led the women’s golf team that had mostly players with little outside experience.
The summer between my senior year in high school, and my freshman year of college, I worked as a golf valet at a local country club, and that was one of my favorite jobs. Being around more golf, and getting to see some amazing golfers inspired me to work harder, and become the best golfer I could become. Looking back, I think about how such a small decision that I made in my sophomore year changed my life forever.

Language

Like every kid in my school district, I took Spanish until I was in middle school. Although I was good at Spanish, I always had an interest in French, so in 6th grade when I was allowed to take French classes, I jumped at it and fell in love with the language. My teacher made learning fun and easy, and I quickly picked up all of the material. One of my greatest feats is never getting lower than a 90 on any one of my French tests or quizzes in Middle school French. After taking The Grand Concours in 7th and 8th grade, my score qualified me for honorable mention, and I was presented with a certificate at a Board of Education meeting. I continued to take French up until the AP French Language and Culture class in my Senior year of high school and passed the Seal of Bilaterally Test in New Jersey.
Italian was something that I had wanted to learn for a while as well. One night in the Summer of 2022 when I was watching and staying with my Grandma, we watched Moscati: Doctor to the Poor in Italian with closed captions, and realized that I understood a lot of it because of my previous knowledge of Spanish and French. On that day, I started to use Duolingo and learn Italian for fun. It was nice to understand a little more whenever I watched Italian movies with my Grandma and be able to talk with two of my best friends who spoke Italian conversationally.

Cooking and Baking

Cooking wasn’t always something that I was super fond of as for the first 15(ish) years of my life I was a very picky eater, but during the pandemic, I started to experiment more with what I cooked. I found a love of making different meals and creating new flavors. I began to make homemade pasta, marinated chicken, poached eggs, and stir fry. It helped me open my horizons and start trying new foods.

On the other hand, baking has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I lost my first tooth while baking cookies with my Aunt, and am known for making sugar cookies for the holidays and delivering them to my friends and family. Baking was just something that I loved to do, whether it was cheesecakes, cookies, or pizzelles, desserts were my favorite. I also loved baking French delicatessens including a mille crepe, chouquettes, and macarons.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing was something that I always loved but it wasn’t until I got my first laptop that I was able to do a lot more writing. I completed NaNoWriMo twice, and when I wanted to start screenwriting, I downloaded screenwriting software and began writing like that. I wrote the first season of a show, and am currently working on a full-length feature film that I hope to have the chance to produce one day.

Formula 1

My entry into the world of Formula 1 was a little different than most new fans. Before I fell in love with the sport, I was (and still am) obsessed with Cars. I meant to follow the McLaren car account, but instead followed the McLaren Formula 1 team as I did not realize at the time that the McLaren car Instagram account was @mclarenautomotive. I began to see F1 videos pop up on my Instagram feed and slowly became more and more interested in the drivers, and how the sport worked. From there, I began watching the races on Sundays and following other teams. As I learned more and more about the sport, I eventually watched Drive to Survive on Netflix and became fully invested in everything related to Formula 1. Although I have to be loyal to McLaren for introducing me to the sport, I love Scuderia Ferrari. Every race weekend I watch qualifying and the grand prix, as well as the sprint and the sprint shootout religiously. When not in school or work, I will also watch the Free practice sessions. It has become such a huge part of my life, and I look forward to seeing the sport and my team's progress in the future as well as the new season coming soon. I am now looking forward to seeing my first Grand Prix in Montreal in June of 2024.

Music

In 4th grade, I started to play the violin and whenever I went to my PopPop’s house, I would always play with him on the keyboard. It always made him light up, and looking back is one of my fondest memories. In high school, I made some of my best friends in orchestra class. We were a family, and although I was never the greatest at violin, I was able to learn more about classical music and foster a love for listening to it.

Dance

I started dancing at 2.5 years old and danced at my studio until I graduated at 18. For 16 years I participated in different companies and activities at my studio. I was a teacher’s assistant for 5 years, and. Although I am not officially enrolled at a dance studio anymore, I enjoy doing it recreationally for exercise, and for fun by myself. It is something that never truly leaves you and makes me feel good to creatively think about choreography or to perform and move.

Theatre

As a theatre major, I love theatre, especially musical theatre. I saw my first Broadway show when I was 16, but have listened to many more, my favorite show that I have seen would have to be The Great Gatsby Musical which was performed at The Papermill Playhouse in Milburn, NJ. It was a spectacular show that I am so happy I was able to get tickets for. There have been so many different shows that I was fortunate to see at Lehigh, and hope to see many more soon.
