I fell in love with this Riley Blake Designs fabric (which was also a "buy the whole bolt, get 50% off" deal) and I wanted to make a very tropical-looking outfit for my trip to the beautiful Jersey Shore. I love the Jersey Shore, and I have been told by a world traveler that it's the most beautiful beach in the world, so I take that as a win for New Jersey.
The skirt was one of the easiest things I have ever made. I sewed a rolled hem on the bottom and then a rolled hem on each end of the skirt. Then, I sewed the raw edge of the skirt to a waistband and topstitched over it so all of the raw edges were hidden.
The skirt was a wrap skirt, so there was a leg slit. It overlapped enough that it wouldn't open up to the top when I was walking, but enough that it would show a little bit when I was walking, and the waistband was closed with a snap.
The top was also a pretty quick project. The front had a rolled hem on the bottom, and the top had an opening sewed in to slide elastic through. Once I pulled the elastic through, I sewed each end to the back piece, which was just a long rectangle the length of my back. I sewed the sides to the front ruffle to the back piece, and then it was done!
The elastic was a little smaller than my bust, so when it was on my body, it stayed up.
Since I’m self-conscious, the skirt was very high rise, and the top hung over the top, so it hid all the bits I didn't want the world to see. It was super easy to make and super cute!
