I started sewing this skirt in my dorm, and it sat half-finished for a few months up in my closet. I knew I had this bridal shower coming up for my cousin, and I knew that I wanted to wear that skirt (when it was finished), but I didn’t know what I could do to make it a little different from everything else I had already made.
It took a while for me to make the closure on the back, but I fell back on the good old grommets with a light pink ribbon to tighten it.
The top took a lot of workshopping. I knew that I wanted it to be backless, and that was it. I spent a few days drawing up different ideas and decided to just wing it.
I started with my normal tube but figured out where the front ended. Once I knew where I needed it to be so my stomach wouldn’t be exposed, I started cutting upwards to make the ends skinnier so I could tie it into a bow.
The front was scrunched like always, and then it was time to sew it to the skirt. It was weird to only sew the front part of the bodice, but that's what needed to be done to finish my design.
I finished the edges of the ties, and then scrunched it up a little more to give it a little more detail, and easier to tie, and added some extra fabric to extend them to make a long floppy bow.
To put it on, I tied the bodice bows as tight as I could, and then fastened the skirt, and it was on! Everybody complimented the dress! I would always just say, "Thank you," but my Mom would always butt in and say, “you know, she made her dress?”
I'm glad my Mom was there to flex my sewing skills for me because sometimes I am a little too shy to say anything.
